Instead of a Summer Fair this year, the people of Craven Vale decided to organise a whole week of free community activities for residents of the area, under the title “Craven Vale Summer Jamboree”.
Most of the activities were held at The Vale Community Centre on Hadlow Close and free refreshments were available throughout the week.
The jam-packed programme of activities included:
- Monday – Yoga Taster session, Gentle Exercise Taster session, Craft activities for young people
- Tuesday – Darts knock out competition, Quiz
- Wednesday – Café morning, Jigsaws and board games afternoon
- Thursday – Older People’s Outing to Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare
- Friday – cookery demonstration – cooking on a budget
- Saturday – Community BBQ and Clean up
Lots of people got involved and had the chance to try new types of exercise as well as getting to know their neighbours better through shared activities such as darts and jigsaws. Food was provided by volunteer Paula who put on a lovely buffet spread for the events and provided sandwiches for the day trip on Thursday.
And Saturday’s barbecue saw dozens of local people come to the community centre to chat with each other, enjoy music together and get stuck in to a sausage or burger from the grill. Some of them even had a chance to try out a spot of Morris dancing!
Located in the east of the city, on the way up to Race Hill, the Craven Vale area benefits from plenty of greenery and wonderful sea views. The busy community centre provides a hub for local people, with regular fixtures such as the food bank and community café (where a cooked breakfast costs just £3) taking place each week and a busy programme of activities for the over 50s group. TDC works closely with the Craven Vale Community Association in the area – helping to increase community spirit amongst roughly 750 households and to improve the attractiveness and amenities of the area.
