TDC Summer Programme

TDC Youth Work Brighton

TDC Youth Work Brighton

By Elle Hartle, Digital Marketing Apprentice.

Over the summer break lots has been going on across the city in all the organisations which make up the Brighton & Hove Youth Collective. This included a summer programme run by The Trust for Developing Communities. This program gave young people the opportunity to choose any activity that they wished to do from a list of available activities.

Some of these included residential trips including camping, and day trips which included a trip to Thorpe Park and a Quad Biking trip. These activities and residential trips really allowed the young people to socialise and make friends throughout the summer. The summer program has proven very successful with keeping the young people entertained and keeping them busy as well as giving them something to do. The pictures here show the horse riding and go-karting day trips and mug painting at the youth cafe.

As well as these activities we also had a Youth Café at the Whitehawk Inn on Wednesday afternoons 3 till 5. Here there were youth workers to offer snacks, make smoothies and to be creative with some doodling and board games.

Throughout the summer weeks we met lots of young people attending some of the many activities and residential that were on offer. We are hoping that some of these new young people will come along to some of our youth groups in the future including the Young Women’s group and Thursday’s Youth Club at the 67 Centre.

As well as having these activities for the young people to enjoy, we at TDC also think that there are lots of other positives and benefits that will help to improve a young person’s confidence as they learn and develop new skills whilst on the summer program. This as a result will, we hope, benefit them in the future with school, college and potential jobs.

From our observations throughout the summer program, the behaviour of the young people proved amazing and as a result it also made the activities, residential trips and day trips really fun and enjoyable for everyone that was involved including local  youth workers.

We have had lots of positive feedback from a number of young people and parents and carers including: “Thank you so much for a great day out with my friends!!!!!!! I have really enjoyed it today! I’m so very grateful”. Plus some feedback from parents and carers “(my sons) had a lovely day. Thank You”.

Plans are already underway for next year’s summer program but for now we are back to having our weekly youth sessions and events taking place throughout the year. We are hoping to get as many young people and parents or carers involved with what will be going on.

For more information on times and dates of our regular youth clubs please contact our community workers with young people Claire [email protected] and Caroline [email protected]

Phoenix Estate Community BBQ

By Emma Reeves, Community Development Worker for Tarner.

We had a great day when we attended the Phoenix Estate Community BBQ on Saturday 15th Sept.

The residents had a wonderful time at their, luckily the sun was shining all day and everyone who came enjoyed the event. Thanks to All Different All Equal and the Hyde Foundation for funding the day, and to the Tarner Community Project for lending us their massive BBQ and large speaker.

The Mobile Skate Park was a great success as well as the oversized games from The Resource Centre. Bruce from Bike for Life came along and helped fix residents’ bicycles and there were plenty of free burgers and sandwiches for all.

Phoenix Gallery were there with their cake and chat stall to discuss ideas for the neighbourhood and we also had the Fire brigade arrive in a fire engine for the young people to explore plus the offers of free smoke alarm installations.

Thanks to all the hard work of volunteers on the day and leading up to the event.

All in all a fabulous afternoon!

Supporting the Chinese Elders

Chinese Elders TDC Community Development Brighton

By Sayanti Banerjee, BME engagement and link worker.

This  year, TDC have continued our longstanding work with the Chinese Elders – a local Chinese older people’s group that meets weekly. Group members exchange knowledge and information about citywide services and celebrate Chinese festivals together. PC Tang the interpreter for the group has been volunteering for a number of years, he is the main point of contact and helps the group engage with local events and services. PC Tang has provided some valuable feedback over the years to the CCG and Council outlining the needs of the Chinese community in Brighton. At TDC we have funded trips for the group and invited them to our events and AGM. Our community workers work closely with the group supporting and engaging them with the local services.

The Park Life Big Picnic – Whitehawk

Park Life Whitehawk TDC Community Development Brighton

On Saturday 1st September TDC were thrilled to be involved in the Park Life Big Picnic, organised by a group of families in Whitehawk to raise awareness of their campaign to improve their local parks.

Park Life Whitehawk TDC Community Development Brighton

Park Life are engaging local residents to fight for better parks facilities for local children and the picnic next to St Cuthmann’s Church saw lots of local people come along to enjoy games, sports and music as well as take part in a consultation on what they would like to see from their parks.

TDC were there hosting the smoothie bike – tempting families with delicious, healthy drinks and encouraging them to get fit at the same time. The TDC youth team are engaged in the Whitehawk area on detached youth work as well as running the recently launched Whitehawk Inn Youth café. We have also been enjoying attending plenty of local community festivals such as this one.

Follow Park Life on facebook to keep up to date with their campaign and to give them your thoughts if you’re local to the area.

Moulsecoomb & Bevendean Neighbourhood Action Plan (NAP)

Moulsecoomb and Bevendean Neighbourhood Action Plan

Moulsecoomb and Bevendean Neighbourhood Action Plan

Moulsecoomb & Bevendean launched its Neighbourhood Action Plan on 8th August with community members from across the ward joining councillors and services to hear about their local priorities.

There are three key themes in the NAP –

·       Community Spaces, Safety & Environment

·       Health & wellbeing

·       Activity, Learning & Employment

This launch meeting looked at the first theme with guests from Brighton & Hove City Council (BHCC) Planning explaining the proposed increased regulation on Houses of Multiple Occupancy and from BHCC regulatory services to introduce the new Field Officer role.

TDC would like to thank everyone not only for their valuable contributions to this meeting, but also to the plan itself which will continue to be as meaningful as the participation in it from the community and services. The next meeting will be in November and will feed back on progress across the NAP whilst focusing on a different theme.

The full document will soon be available on the BHCC website, but in the meantime you can download a copy here

If you would like to get more involved, or just be kept in the loop please give your details to Kirsty Walker: [email protected]

Coriander Club Visit for the Moulsecoomb Bangladeshi Women’s Group

Moulsecoomb Bangladeshi WOmen's Group Community Development Brighton TDC

With funding from East Brighton Trust, the Moulsecoomb Bangladeshi Women’s Group (BWG) went on an educational and intergenerational trip with 25 people, 12 children and 13 adults, to the Coriander Club at Spitalfields City Farm. This was followed by a buffet lunch and a visit to East London Mosque in Tower Hamlets – one of the largest Mosques in Europe.

Moulsecoomb Bangladeshi WOmen's Group Community Development Brighton TDC
(L-R) TDC’s Ratna, Lutfun of the Coriander Club and BWG coordinator Mish

The Coriander Club is a gardening and cookery club for older generation Bengali women living in the Spitalfield area. Founder Lutfun Hussain arrived from Bangladesh in 1969, a young wife and mother speaking very little English who missed her family and familiar food very much. In 1999 she decided to start volunteering at Spitalfield City Farm to try growing native vegetables from Bangladesh and in 2000 the Coriander Club was born. Over the years, more volunteers have joined in and today the club is thriving. The Coriander Club is vital for improving the mental health and wellbeing of local Bengali women, many of whom speak very little English, suffer with long term health conditions and social isolation. The club provides a regular opportunity to volunteer and socialise with others, where women can learn to grow vegetables, cook and share healthy meals together. Every Tuesday a women-only gardening session is held which helps offset isolation, loneliness and homesickness amongst the volunteers.

The members of the Moulsecoomb Bangladeshi Women’s Group (BWG) found this story to be very inspiring and wanted to find out more about the project and experience it for themselves. Many of the women already grow or would like to start growing their own food so the aim of the trip was to learn more about cultivating specific native Bangladeshi vegetables and explore the feasibility of the group to start a food growing project on a joint allotment in Moulsecoomb in the future.

Moulsecoomb Bangladeshi WOmen's Group Community Development Brighton TDC

Ratna Jan Bibi, our Community Development Worker for Black & Minority Ethnic Communities Wellbeing said “The trip was truly wonderful! It was pure magic seeing the ladies so happy, smiley, confident, ambitious, capable and full of sparks!”

One of the ladies told us “This is the first time I’ve been on a train. I really liked walking up and down the carriage and very much enjoyed looking at the rolling landscape through the big train window”.

At the Mosque, everyone enjoyed learning about the history of the building and the different services they provide such as the counselling, legal advice and religious education. For many of the BWG members, it was a dream come true to be able to pray at the Maryam Centre, a dedicated safe space for Women. Everyone enjoyed learning about beekeeping and hearing about the beehive on top of the Mosque.

But the highlight of the trip was the tour of Spitalfields farm and the Coriander Club. Members of the BWG learnt about how the farm operates, different services they provide and about the different animals and their welfare. They also had the chance to pose their questions to Coriander Club founder Lutfun and learn about the challenges and successes the group have experienced over the years. The Brighton visitors were impressed by the enormous Bottle Gourds, known in Bangladesh as Kodu, which grow in polytunnels suspended from the roof by macrame nets. Many of the Brighton group had never seen these grown in the UK before and didn’t think it was possible.

Moulsecoomb Bangladeshi Women's Group Community Development Brighton TDC

Mishruna Kibria (Mish), coordinator of the Moulsecoomb group felt thoroughly inspired by the visit  “I just loved the whole atmosphere of the garden. It’s fantastic – it’s a charity not a business – a charity vegetable garden in the middle of the city! For the women in our group to see all the traditional vegetables from Bangladesh is amazing. For someone like my mum who lives in the UK it makes her so happy.

In Brighton, there isn’t anywhere for Bengali women to come together outdoors and do something active together. If we could pull off something like this in Moulsecoomb it would be something so incredible and important – people would come to visit us!”

The children enjoyed the garden too and shared their thoughts:

“Are we going to build a garden like this in Brighton? I would love it, I think there should be an area for children so they can choose what to do and what to grow. Then you could take things home to eat and also people could pay 50p if they wanted to buy something and we could give it to charity.” – 10-year-old attendee.

“The vegetables looked like real vegetables – you never normally see that. There were so many Bengali vegetables, I’ve never seen that in Britain before. The whole experience was really fun. There were places for people to hang out together and eat and chat. I would really like to go with my family and my friends if we had a place like this in Brighton.” – 13-year-old attendee

And Mish also had some very kind words to say about how TDC’s community development team helped them plan the visit, in particular Ratna and Moulsecoomb Community Development Worker Anke Thurm: “I couldn’t pull off a trip like this without TDC. I would never have thought of something this big – coming to London for the day on the train. Some of the women have never been on a train before and were scared to. It’s been so good and really raised their self-esteem. It’s made them brave! They are asking what we are going to do next and they are even thinking about coming to London on the train again themselves. They have even been able to come to the East London Mosque and pray and see what London Muslim community groups do here. It really has been so good for their self-esteem – I can’t imagine how much good it would do to have a garden like this in Brighton.”

All that’s left to say is what a gourd time we had, which is clear from the photos we took on the day. And of course we’ll keep you posted as soon as we have an update on the progress of the Brighton Bangladeshi Gardening Club!

Summer Holiday Fun for Young People in Moulsecoomb, Coldean and Bevendean

Youth activities TDC Youth Work Brighton

Youth activities Brighton

The Activity programme for Summer 2018 kicked off this week with a chilled movie and pizza night at the 67 Centre where we  settled down to watch and tunefully sing along to The Greatest Showman.

This was followed the next day by a high adrenaline trip Gokarting at Teamsport in Lancing where 12 young people raced their way around the track. Not all of the young people knew each other at the start of the day but during it we spotted new conversations and friendships being made as they, climbed into boiler suits and donned crash helmets (see photos below). The group fed back that they’d really enjoyed themselves and were keen for a repeat trip soon. And with the sun shining still this was a great way to start the school holidays.

We still have a few weeks to go and a great programme to deliver – we are already fully booked for Horseriding in Lower Chaily and the Sky High Trampolining in Peacehaven but there are still spaces on a Mountain Biking session (22nd August) and Thorpe Park (29th August) . Plus we are open for youth club at the 67 centre in Moulsecoomb every Thursday over the summer (5.30-7.30pm) and will be out and about on Mondays in the area with some fun sports activities. Caroline can tell you more if you give her a call on 07481896892 or email on [email protected]

Craven Vale Summer Jamboree

Craven Vale Summer Jamboree TDC Community Development Brighton

Craven Vale Summer Jamboree TDC Community Development Brighton

Instead of a Summer Fair this year, the people of Craven Vale decided to organise a whole week of free community activities for residents of the area, under the title “Craven Vale Summer Jamboree”.

Most of the activities were held at The Vale Community Centre on Hadlow Close and free refreshments were available throughout the week.

The jam-packed programme of activities included:

  • Monday – Yoga Taster session, Gentle Exercise Taster session, Craft activities for young people
  • Tuesday – Darts knock out competition,  Quiz
  • Wednesday – Café morning, Jigsaws and board games afternoon
  • Thursday – Older People’s Outing to Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare
  • Friday – cookery demonstration – cooking on a budget
  • Saturday – Community BBQ and Clean up

Lots of people got involved and had the chance to try new types of exercise as well as getting to know their neighbours better through shared activities such as darts and jigsaws. Food was provided by volunteer Paula who put on a lovely buffet spread for the events and provided sandwiches for the day trip on Thursday.

And Saturday’s barbecue saw dozens of local people come to the community centre to chat with each other, enjoy music together and get stuck in to a sausage or burger from the grill. Some of them even had a chance to try out a spot of Morris dancing!

Located in the east of the city, on the way up to Race Hill, the Craven Vale area benefits from plenty of greenery and wonderful sea views. The busy community centre provides a hub for local people, with regular fixtures such as the food bank and community café (where a cooked breakfast costs just £3) taking place each week and a busy programme of activities for the over 50s group. TDC works closely with the Craven Vale Community Association in the area – helping to increase community spirit amongst roughly 750 households and to improve the attractiveness and amenities of the area.
