Hollingdean Community Catch Up

Hollingdean Community Cath up TDC Community Development Brighton

Hollingdean Community Cath up TDC Community Development Brighton

Residents of Hollingdean were invited to Hollingdean Community Centre on Wednesday evening to share their thoughts about the place they call home.

The Hollingdean Community Catch Up offered residents the chance to bring their ideas, energy and creativity to discuss issues important to people in the area and to act collectively on them.

Visitors were invited to discuss the following areas, and everyone was welcome to share their ideas.

  • Getting my information
  • The place I live in
  • My health and wellbeing
  • Who might find it difficult to join in?

Organised by  TDC and the Hollingdean Development Trust (HDT), the Hollingdean Community Catch Up was a real success this year with dozens of local residents and anchor groups attending as well as representatives from local services such as Brighton & Hove City Council (BHCC) Libraries, BHCC Children services, BHCC Housing, CASE (Community, Advice, Support and Education) Central, Digital Brighton & Hove, the Impetus Neighbourhood Care Scheme. Delicious food was provided by the local community chef and many positive contributions were made, with a range of perspectives, generating great interest in working collaboratively.

One resident told us  “Well done for organizing the Community catch up – I’m really glad I came, it gave me lots of ideas. [My nine year old daughter] said she was really glad she’d gone to the meeting too as she said she learnt a lot and also that you’d made her feel really important when talking and listening to her – thankyou!” and we were happy to hear from one of the trustees of HDT, a local resident “I thought it was the best we’ve had by a long way”.

Tarner Festival 2018

Tarner Festival 2018 TDC Community Development Brighton

Tarner Festival 2018 TDC Community Development Brighton

Once again the locals put on a fantastic, family-friendly community event in Tarner Park this weekend as Tarner World Festival 2018 took place.

This year, Tarner Community Project partnered with Audio Active and South East Dance to provide a range of entertainment, suitable for all ages and made accessible to the D/deaf community through BSL interpreters and highly visual performances.

Along with Brighton Unemployed Family Centre Project, Tarner Area Partnership and Tarner children’s centre, TDC were there on the day  and we particularly appreciated the opportunity to ask people about what matters to them in Queens Park Road for the neighbourhood action plan. One new resident even told us “This park is a hidden treasure”.

The festival was a fun celebration on a beautiful sunny day, and the people of Tarner showed their community spirit with an excellent turn out.  Neighbourhoods projects manager Kirsty Walker said of the festival “This event is a great way of celebrating young people’s volunteering and creativity instead of focusing on negative issues related to anti-social behaviour in the park”.

There were plenty of activities on offer at this year’s festival – from poetry workshops, skateboarding, t-shirt designing and graffiti to a chance to meet a selection of unusual animals. And as usual the festival showcased a fabulous selection of food and drink – from slushies and cocktails to a BBQ and delicious home made Indian cuisine.

A routine from local dance troupe Tantrum and mini Tantrum was a particular highlight and the members of the troupe had the opportunity to meet Audio Active Patron Rag ’n’ Bone Man who was there enjoying the day out with his family and cheering on the talented young people on stage. If you don’t know much about Tantrum, read our interview with project leader Sue and find out the part that TDC community development workers played in helping set up the group.

Youth Welfare at Brighton Pride

Brighton Pride Youth work

Youth Team Brighton Pride TDC Community Development

Brighton Pride returns to the city this August and the Brighton & Hove Youth Collective will again be providing a team of trained youth workers to look out for young people at the party in Preston Park. In 2017, over 300,000 people gathered in the city for the Pride parade and party, many of these young people looking to join in the annual celebration of the LGBTU+ community.

This year, TDC will run a Youth Welfare tent throughout the Pride party. This tent will provide refuge for any young person in distress – trained Youth workers from the Brighton and Hove Youth Collective will be on hand alongside the TDC team to help and support any young person in need.

Adam Muirhead, TDC Projects Manager for youth work, will be co-ordinating Pride Youth Welfare again this year. Adam said “We’re really happy to be at Pride Festival this year, making sure young people have the maximum fun without it becoming unsafe through alcohol, substance misuse, sex or sunshine. The Police, Council and Pride Team themselves have all been fantastic at recognising this need and bringing our team of dedicated youth work professionals on board to help make it another hugely successful festival.”

The Tent will be positioned just outside of the border to the party at Preston Park. The youth team will be based there both Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th August, wearing official Brighton pride festival t-shirts. They will be on the lookout for any young person who looks like they may be in need of assistance. Free condoms, water, snacks, sun cream and sick bags will be available and the team will also be able to help young people make contact with friends and family members to ensure they get home safely.

Bevendean’s community festival BevFest took place this year on Saturday 7th July.

The Friends of BevFest committee worked for months to bring together musical acts, food and drink stalls and the local community groups and services to create a truly wonderful family and community festival on the Playing Field in Lower Bevendean.

Despite the hot weather and World Cup football, lots of Bevendean residents and neighbours came to celebrate the summer with great music from Brighton bands, beer from the Bevy, yummy food, activities for kids and young people and of course to meet local community groups presenting their important work and promoting healthy living in their neighbourhood.

Volunteering at the Trust for Developing Communities

BME wellbeing event TDC community development Brighton

Hello my name is Louise. I am currently studying MA Conflict, Security and Development at University of Sussex. Previously I was a volunteer at the Trust for Developing Communities (TDC) supporting BME wellbeing across Brighton and Hove. This experience was rewarding as it gave me great insights to how TDC carries out community development work across the city. This has led me to wanting to support their work further and now I am working at TDC as an administrator.

As part of my study, I was interested in learning and gaining experience of how community development approach is used to build, develop and strengthen community cohesion.

I came across TDC whilst looking for volunteering opportunities in Brighton and Hove. I had always thought volunteering was merely a nice addition onto my CV. However, my volunteering experience at TDC has completely altered my impression of volunteering.

Volunteering one day a week since March 2018, I learnt about the incredible work of many statutory, community and voluntary organisations. I gained insights into challenges these groups and organisations face on a daily basis, and how they work together to support the wellbeing of our community and ensure community cohesion.

My volunteer highlight so far was working on the BME wellbeing event, A Way A Day, held at BMECP on Wednesday 18th April. Prior to the event I researched how to reach and where to advertise the event in order to attract the attention of BME residents. This was really interesting and useful because it taught me about reaching people of BME backgrounds we are not in contact with.

Around 400 people attended the A Way A Day event representing a wide variety of service providers and social groups from different ethnic backgrounds. Through a range of activities, groups and organisations were able to ensure community cohesion, and promote available services for improving health and wellbeing, including where to find help and how to access support.

These all would not have happened if it were not for all the individuals and groups who volunteered that day, making it a joyous celebration of Brighton and Hove rich diversity!

By Louise Yu, former TDC volunteer on the BME Communities Wellbeing Project and now TDC administrator.

Its great volunteering experience and would look pretty good on your CV!

Whitehawk Youth Café

On Monday 25th June the Whitehawk Youth Café opened at the Whitehawk Inn. The TDC youth team have launched this café to provide a nice chill out space for young people to come in after school for a smoothie, juice or hot chocolate. There will be chance to play board games, get some health advice, get homework done or just chat about the day. Over time young people will help to decide what else the café can offer them. We are hoping that someone will give us an exciting new name so watch this space!

Adam Muirhead, Projects Manager for the TDC Youth Team said of the initiative “Whitehawk is a relatively new area of delivery for us at TDC and we’re keen to deliver something meaningful and impactful.  The new Youth Cafe at the Whitehawk Inn on Mondays is going to be a great way for local teenagers to come together to socialise, have fun and gain skills and experience through getting involved in its delivery.  We hope to see lots of people getting stuck in!”

And Caroline Vitta, TDC Community Worker with Young People elaborates “We are really hoping young people come to the Whitehawk Youth Café with lots of ideas about what they’d like to see. We have been out and about in Whitehawk promoting the café and chatting to young people about this. Our venue, The Whitehawk Inn, is a lovely space so it would be amazing to see it buzzing with young people on a Monday afternoon.

We also want local volunteers of all ages to get involved in running the café. We have already seen great examples over the years of how successful community led projects benefit young people, for example the Crew Club and Manor Gym, so we would love to see that happen with our project.

I ran the old Whitehawk Youth Centre for 10 years until it closed a few years ago. I have many happy memories of working in Whitehawk and so I’m really excited to be developing new provision for young people in the area.”

The café is open 3.30-5.30 every Monday including over the summer holidays. Please come along and tell all your Whitehawk-based friends!

Want to volunteer or have an idea of what you’d like to see at the café? Get in touch with Caroline TDC Youthworker on facebook or email her [email protected]

Moulsecoomb Sports and Activities festival for Young People

Moulsecoomb Youth sports festival. Community Development Brighton TDC

Moulsecoomb Youth sports festival. Community Development Brighton TDC

Our annual Sports and Activities Festival for Young People took place on Saturday 16th June this year and moved more in to Moulsecoomb to run from the 67 Centre and Moulsecoomb Leisure Centre rather than Wild Park. We had a fantastic day with 55 young people plus parents and carers taking part in a football tournament and trying out skating, climbing, table tennis, disc golf, the smoothie bike, Boccia and other activities. It was great to see so many young people getting active.

We had a visit from MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle and the Mayor of Brighton & Hove Cllr Dee Simson too, both of who spent time chatting to young people and joining in activities. Many thanks to the East Brighton Trust for funding a substantial part of the day and also to Albion in the Community, Branched Out, the BHCC Skatepark Team, Freedom Leisure and the BHCC Duke of Edinburgh Award Youth Team for helping to make the day a success.

Yoga Project

And in other sports news, we’ve just finished a 10 week Yoga for Teenagers Project at Moulsecoomb Leisure Centre which was funded by the Robert Eatom Memorial Fund and supported by the Brighton Yoga Foundation. 20 young people tried Yoga for the first time. We are looking at interest to run the project again in September but are also really keen to get some yoga sessions into Whitehawk too.

St George’s Hall in North Moulsecoomb celebrated its place in the community and neighbourhood on Saturday 23rd June with a summer fair for local people, thanks to funding from East Brighton Trust. A warm and sunny day – perfect for fun on the bouncy castle and BBQ with friends from across North Moulsecoomb and beyond.

It was also a day for community groups based at St George’s Hall to showcase their work. The 55th Brighton Scouts Group, North Moulsecoomb Tenants and Residents Association, Moulsecoomb Bangladeshi Women’s Group and New Life Church were there.

St George’s Hall Committee also had the chance to ask some questions about the neighbourhood and what the hall could offer on top of the groups that are meeting there. The Committee is now planning for future community activities in the hall in and after the summer.
