New Course! Working in C-ODE; Community – Organisations, Development and Engagement

We are exploring the possibility of running a new course for anyone working in communities, which will lead to a qualification in Community Development, level 2 or 3.

The course would start in October 2016 and run for one day a week for 30 weeks. It would support learners to develop practical and analytical skills to work with a range of communities.

If you are interested in finding out more, please register your interest by email [email protected]  or call us on 01273 262220.

There will be an information workshop on Wednesday 27th April 2016, where you can find out more about the course and help co-design the course materials.

Working With Communities Course – New dates for 2016

We have some new dates for our popular Working with Communities course.

The course gives an overview of different ways to work with communities and then supports participants to develop their own approach and test it out. So it would directly support any work with communities you are doing.

The course is also a great opportunity to network with and learn from other people from different sectors in the city who are working with communities.

It is well established and past participants really enjoy the participative nature of the course and the way it focusses on the work they are currently doing.
The new dates are:

Tuesday 19th January 2016 with day two on 1st March.

Thursday 4th February with day two on 17th March, this course is particularly focussed on the role of teams, leaders and trustees when working with communities.

We are also running a special one day course for participants who have already working with a community and want to reflect on their work on Wednesday 13th January.

Please book on to one of the above courses.  All courses are at Brighton Town Hall, Bartholomew Square, BN1 1JA and are delivered in partnership between TDC and Brighton & Hove City Council.

TDC’s photo exhibition winners to tour Brighton & Hove

TDC’s photo exhibition winners to tour Brighton & Hove

Our photo competition with the theme of ‘Celebrating Diverse Communities’ saw many fantastic entries focusing on the various groups and organisations that TDC works with across Brighton & Hove, Portslade and Peacehaven.   The different photos depict a wide range of diversity: young women, physical disability, learning disability, LGBT Pride, neurodiversity, community activity and older people.

Ten photos were shortlisted and the winners were announced at our AGM in October.

The winner in the under 18 category was Macyalbion Mechen, who is from an all-girl dance group ‘Tantrum’ based in the Queen’s Park area, Macyalbion said….

TDC 2015 AGM 19

“This photo was taken by me, at the community dance group my Mum runs at The Edge. I took the photo to show diversity and equality as no two people at the dance group are the same, yet they all belong to a community…although we don’t all live close together, we are all in a dance community and everyone loves it. Including me.”

The winner of  26-54 age category was ‘The Hangleton & Knoll Multicultural Women’s Group’

TDC 2015 AGM 38

“Our photo shows us getting together to demonstrate that equality for us means…..celebrating and involving women from all cultures and backgrounds and sharing , understanding and supporting women to be proud of who they are.”

The 26-54 age group was won by ‘Sarah Watson

TDC 2015 AGM 14

The winner of the 55 years and over category was  Robin Berry

TDC 2015 AGM 16

“This photo was taken at the Coldean Community Allotment and equality to me means giving everyone an equal opportunity to enjoy the things that many of us take for granted. To engage with other people, enjoy the fresh air, learn new skills and be part of the community. With the help of our volunteers everyone can use this space and share the produce”.

The TDC ‘Celebrating Diverse Communities’ exhibition including the four winners and six runners up  will be  touring in a variety of community and public spaces around the Brighton & Hove area in the coming months.  More information about where you can see the exhibition will be posted here shortly.

The Trust for Developing Communities is looking for new trustees

The Trust for Developing Communities (TDC) is looking for new members to join our Board of Trustees.

We need people who can help direct TDC towards achieving its mission and ensure it is effectively managed.

You would need to make a commitment to TDC and devote the necessary time, strategic vision, independent judgement, ability to think creatively and willingness to speak your mind!

The Trust for Developing Communities is a voluntary organisation set up by people with experience of community development, living and working in Brighton and Hove, with a particular interest in seeing community development expanded across the City and the South East.

What’s in it for you?

Being a trustee offers opportunities to:
* Use skills and experience effectively
* Represent a community or area you live in / get involved
* Make new contacts and friends / Improve personal networks
* Develop new skills
* Make a difference
* Have fun

We would particularly welcome people who have legal expertise and local business experience.

We are keen to have representation from the full range of communities we work with and we particularly welcome applications from BME, women, young people and other communities of identity.

Applications from all communities are warmly welcomed.

If you feel you have an interest in becoming a new trustee for TDC we can invite you along to one of our upcoming meetings to see it ‘in action’ and discover how it feels for you to be involved.

If you would like to find out more, please contact Linda Saltwell, Chief Executive, for an informal chat on 01273 262220.

Brighton and Hove – Sanctuary On Sea

Dear Brighton and Hove Sanctuary on Sea Supporters

Thank you to everyone who made it to Brighton and Hove Sanctuary on Sea Launch this past Sunday at the Brighthelm Centre. We were thrilled to see that so many Brightonians attended the event, filling the Brighthelm Centre to full capacity and marking a successful start to Refugee Week 2015.

If you happened to miss the launch, don’t worry here is a short recap:

Brighton and Hove Sanctuary on Sea hosted the opening event for Refugee Week 2015 at the Brighthelm Centre. At the event Brighton & Hove was named “Sanctuary on Sea” in recognition of the city-wide efforts made to create a culture of welcome for people fleeing conflict and persecution. Tiffy Allen, coordinator of the National City of Sanctuary movement presented the award to Council Leader Warren Morgan. Warren underlined the city’s commitment to welcoming refugees as did Green MP Caroline Lucas in a rousing introductory speech.

This packed event brought together refugee women, volunteers, politicians, artists and members of the public.The event also celebrated the launch of the Sanctuary on Sea group and featured the premiere of “Tasting My Future”, a documentary about refugee women in Brighton & Hove, made by local film-makers Sylvie Collier and Cathy Maxwell. The inspirational women starring in the film shared their stories of fear, escape, survival and the hope of forging a safe new life. Finally there was Chilean folk music by Jorge Morales and delicious food from Ethiopia, Venezuela and Turkey.
