Older People’s Day 2014 was celebrated at Downlands Court, Peacehaven on October 1st. Singers from Telscombe W1 provided wonderful entertainment with a sing-along of popular melodies which was followed by a high tea for 50 people, including visitors from Margaret House in Uckfield and residents of nearby Ashington Gardens.

Thursday 25th September saw the culmination of a year’s project, when the Trust for Developing Communities launched its new toolkit guide for community groups and voluntary organisations who want to become more Dementia Friendly.
The project was commissioned by Brighton & Hove Council and the Clinical Commissioning Group and involved people with dementia and memory loss and their carers from the very beginning.
Workshops were then held with local community groups, such as The St George’s Hall Lunch Club, and voluntary organisations, such as, Care Co-ops, and participating groups designed action plans setting out ways they could become more dementia friendly. They then put these plans into operation and produced case studies which have been incorporated into the guide.
The launch brought all these people together in an information and launch event; also attending were Brighton & Hove buses who publicised their new Helping Hand Cards to help people who have various disabilities and support needs. Copies of the Guide were snapped up and we are now looking at ways to fund a second print run.
Are you a community group or voluntary sector organisation who would like to become more dementia friendly? Or are you someone who has memory loss or dementia, or a carer of someone with dementia?
The Trust for Developing Communities has been commissioned by the Clinical Commissioning Group (Brighton & Hove) to carry out this project. We are holding this event to launch the dementia friendly guide developed with community groups and organisations.

The TDC will also be supporting the group to promote their summer activities (see picture below) for which we have created a brand new website this year – find out about what is going on over summer for young people at www.brightonsummer or check out www.brightonandhoveyouthcollective for info on things to do throughout the year.
As part of the TDCs Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Health and Wellbeing project, we hosted our first culture specific event ‘All Our Voices’ to bring together people from diverse BME communities across the city to discuss mental health and wellbeing and share their understanding of issues and supports they have experienced.
The project will link with both the BME Needs Assessment for Brighton and Hove being led by the BME Needs Assessment Steering Group, which is looking at a wide range of issues facing BME communities in the city.
The response from local individuals, community based organisations and the statutory sector to the event was quite exciting and over 50 participants joined in to help Brighton & Hove Council and other local services understand what would benefit their community and enable them to live well in the various neighbourhoods of Brighton.
This was the first of many engagement opportunities and the feedback from attendees will be driving the project activities going forward. The participants certainly felt free to express their views and with translation and interpretation support available everyone felt they had a chance to give their views; but then this was about … All Our Voices!

Linda will initially be taking some time to induct into this new role and the staff and trustees wish her all the best.”
Tomorrow is the big day where hoards of local teenagers will descend upon the 67 Centre in Moulsecoomb to vote on how £20,000 of the Council’s Youth budget should be spent locally. The Trust for Developing Communities have been supporting the process by working with the youth steering group made up of local teens to set the criteria and manage the applications. This Saturday (26th April) will see the winners announced following the results of a month of online voting by young people and the votes that projects receive on the day.
If anyone would like to come down between 11am and 2pm you will all be welcome to see this example of participatory budgeting in action, however, only 13 to 19 year olds from Moulsecoomb, Coldean and Bevendean may vote.
